They are injuries to the bones, discs, ligaments or nerves in the neck, which is the upper part of the spine. They range from muscle strains that often improve over time to fractures and spinal cord damage that can cause lasting weakness or paralysis. Most come from sudden, high-force events such as a crash or a fall. This guide explains the basics in plain language. The firm, based in Winchester, Virginia, handles car and truck crash cases and catastrophic injuries for people across the Shenandoah Valley, Richmond and Henrico County.

What the cervical spine is

The cervical spine is the upper section of the spine, located in the neck. It has seven vertebrae, labeled C1 through C7. C1 sits just below the skull, and C7 sits at the base of the neck. Together, these bones support the head and allow it to turn, tilt and nod.

The spinal cord runs through an opening in each vertebra. It carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Nerve roots branch out from the cord to the shoulders, arms and hands, so a neck injury can affect those areas. Discs cushion the bones, and ligaments hold them in place.

For background on spinal cord injuries in general, read the firm’s spinal cord injury overview.

Schedule a case evaluation

Schedule a case evaluation

Common types of cervical spine injuries

Cervical spine injuries fall into a few main groups, and each group affects the body differently. Soft-tissue injuries involve the muscles and ligaments around the neck. They are often the least severe. Even so, a sprain or strain can cause pain and stiffness that lasts a long time.

Disc injuries happen when a disc between two vertebrae is damaged. In a herniated disc, disc material pushes out of place and can press on a nerve root. A study on frontal-impact crashes discusses how uncommon acute disc injuries are in those crashes, and how hard it can be to tie a single herniation to one event.

Fractures are breaks in the vertebrae. A compression fracture crushes the front part of a bone. A burst fracture shatters the bone and can send fragments toward the spinal canal. A fracture-dislocation combines a broken bone with a shifted joint.

The key question is whether the spinal cord itself was harmed. A cervical spinal cord injury means the cord was damaged, not only the bones or soft tissue around it. That damage can affect movement and feeling below the neck.

What causes cervical spine injuries

Most cervical spine injuries come from sudden, high-force impacts to the head, neck or upper back. Car crashes are a common cause. Rear-end, side-impact and rollover crashes can all force the neck beyond its normal range of motion. Crashes involving large trucks and other commercial vehicles are another source of high-force impacts.

Falls from height, falls onto the head, and diving into shallow water also cause these injuries. So do sports collisions and acts of violence.

Less often, the spine is affected by a disease process such as degeneration, infection or a tumor. Those are not crash injuries, but doctors consider them when they assess the neck.

Virginia requires a driver involved in a crash with injury or death to stop and report it to police immediately (Va. Code §§ 46.2-371, 46.2-894). That duty is separate from the deadline to file a lawsuit, which is covered at the end of this guide.

For a related crash type, see the firm’s page on a work van crash and spinal cord injury.

Symptoms to watch for after a neck injury

Neck pain and stiffness are common early signs of a cervical spine injury. Other warning signs include reduced range of motion, tenderness when touching the neck, and headaches that start at the base of the skull.

Nerve signs include numbness, tingling, burning or weakness in the arms, hands, legs or feet. Spinal cord signs are more serious. They can include trouble with coordination or walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or paralysis. MedlinePlus explains that spinal cord injuries at the neck level can cause weakness or paralysis affecting the arms and legs.

Get emergency care right away for loss of movement or feeling, severe neck pain after an impact, trouble breathing or swallowing, or a change in consciousness.

Some symptoms do not appear until hours or days after an injury. A person should be checked even when early symptoms seem mild. Keeping a simple written log of new symptoms can help a doctor track changes over time. Warning signs can change, so new or worsening symptoms deserve attention.

How cervical spine injuries are diagnosed and treated

Doctors diagnose these injuries with a physical and neurological exam, usually along with imaging. X-rays, CT scans and MRI scans each show different details. Bone detail is often seen best on X-ray and CT, while MRI shows soft tissue such as discs and the spinal cord. Doctors may also check for signs of spinal cord involvement during the exam.

Whether a patient needs spinal immobilization or cervical-spine imaging depends on clinical factors and on whether the patient can give reliable answers, according to Virginia Department of Health crash guidance.

Treatment depends on the type of injury, whether the spinal cord is involved, and the person’s overall health. Possible approaches include a cervical collar or brace, medication, physical therapy, rehabilitation, and surgery to stabilize the spine or relieve pressure.

Medical records document the diagnosis and treatment plan. Keeping them organized helps the injured person and their doctors follow the injury over time.

Long-term effects of a cervical spine injury

Some cervical spine injuries cause effects that last well past the first healing period. Chronic neck or arm pain, limited motion and recurring headaches can continue. Weakness, numbness or reduced hand function can also persist. In severe cases, a cervical spinal cord injury can cause paralysis or loss of mobility.

Daily life often changes. Work, driving, household tasks and recreation may need adjusting. Some people need ongoing treatment or assistive equipment. Mood and sleep can also be affected. Long-term effects can be physical, emotional and practical at the same time.

Recovery varies widely from person to person. Keeping notes on pain, sleep and daily limits can help a person describe how the injury affects them.

For how ongoing pain is described in an injury claim, see the firm’s page on proving pain and suffering.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with Correll Law Firm — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a case evaluation

Schedule a case evaluation

Timing rules for Virginia injury claims

Virginia generally allows two years from the date of injury to file a personal injury lawsuit (Va.
